Pune: Farmers Demand Release of Two Cycles of Water From Khadakwasla

Indapur, 8th April 2023: With only two months left before the onset of the monsoon, farmers from the Shetphalgade area are demanding the release of two more cycles of water in the summer season for agricultural irrigation from the Khadakwasla dam. Currently, there is about 13.71 TMC i.e. 47 per cent water reserve remaining in the Khadakwasla project.

As the intensity of summer increases, the water levels in wells have decreased, making it difficult for farmers to irrigate their crops. Therefore, the farmers are urging the Water Resources Department to release one cycle each in April and May from the Khadakwasla dam for agricultural irrigation in Indapur taluka.

While rains typically start in the area of the dams in the catchment area of the Khadakwasla project in the first fortnight of June, the Water Resources Department releases only one cycle of water in summer every year during April and May. Consequently, water reserves remain in the project, and after the onset of rains in the first fortnight of June, the Water Resources Department has to release water into the river unnecessarily, resulting in the wastage of water.

Therefore, the farmers are requesting the Water Resources Department to release two more cycles in the future, taking into consideration the remaining two months of April and May, for the benefit of the farmers. Santosh Wable, former Director of the Market Committee, said, “If we take into account the water storage, it is easily possible to give the Water Resources Department two more cycles in summer for irrigation of farmers’ agriculture in the coming period.”

As the demand for water increases, it is crucial to manage and distribute the available water resources efficiently. The Water Resources Department must consider the farmers’ demands and take appropriate measures to provide sufficient water for irrigation.
