CJP Protest Row: Delhi Police Says 21 Violence-Related FIRs Will Continue

New Delhi, 31st July 2026: The Delhi Police has informed the Delhi government that it cannot withdraw 21 FIRs registered in connection with violence during the CJP-led ‘Chalo Sansad’ protest, stating that the cases involve serious cognisable offences and are already under judicial process.

The development comes days after the Delhi government directed police not to take further legal action against protesters who do not have any criminal antecedents. However, the police clarified that while no coercive action may be taken against eligible protesters, FIRs involving offences such as rioting, assault on public servants, damage to public property and other serious charges cannot simply be withdrawn through an administrative order.

According to police, the 21 FIRs are linked to incidents of violence reported during the protest and have already been registered before competent courts. Officials said that once investigations are underway and charge sheets are filed, withdrawal of such cases can only take place through due legal procedure and with the court’s approval.

The clarification follows the Centre’s assurance, accepted by the CJP, that no adverse action would be taken against protesters without a criminal background, leading to the end of the 36-day agitation. While the government has maintained that peaceful protesters should not face legal consequences, it has also stated that those with criminal antecedents or those accused of serious offences will continue to face action.

Reacting to the police’s stand, CJP leaders reiterated that they are seeking complete withdrawal of all FIRs filed against protesters and warned that they could resume protests if the assurances made by the government are not fully implemented.
