Meta Introduces New Safeguards for VIP Accounts After PM Modi Video Controversy

New Delhi, 31st July 2026: Meta has introduced stricter review protocols for high-profile or VIP accounts after the brief removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook video earlier this week triggered a row between the social media giant and the Centre.

According to sources, Meta has informed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) that posts made by the Prime Minister and other prominent public figures will now undergo additional oversight before any moderation action is taken.

Any decision involving such accounts will be reviewed by at least two senior company officials as part of a new multi-level verification process.

The move comes after Facebook temporarily restricted a video posted by Prime Minister Modi addressing the country’s youth and reiterating the government’s commitment to tackling paper leaks.

Meta later restored the content, apologised for the incident, and attributed the removal to an error in its AI-powered automated content moderation system.

Despite the apology, the Centre said Meta’s explanation was inadequate and summoned the company’s senior executives to seek further clarification. IT Secretary S. Krishnan had stated that while the company admitted its mistake, the government wanted more details on how such an error occurred and what measures would be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As part of its response, Meta has also outlined corrective measures and shared its assessment of the incident with the ministry. A delegation from the company is expected to meet government officials to discuss the episode, along with broader issues related to content moderation and platform accountability.

Government sources have maintained that the matter is still under examination, with officials continuing to assess Meta’s explanation and the circumstances that led to the temporary restriction of the Prime Minister’s post.
