Maharashtra to Crack Down on Delayed Infrastructure Projects; Fadnavis Warns Contractors
Mumbai, 5th June 2026 : Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed government agencies to take strict action against contractors who fail to complete infrastructure projects within the prescribed timelines, warning that such firms may be barred from receiving future government contracts.
The directive was issued during a review meeting of the Chief Minister’s Infrastructure War Room at Sahyadri Guest House, where progress on 20 major infrastructure and redevelopment projects across the state was assessed.
Emphasizing the importance of timely project completion, Fadnavis said infrastructure projects are critical to Maharashtra’s economic and social development and should ideally be completed within three to three-and-a-half years. He noted that delays not only increase project costs but also result in substantial losses to the state’s economy.
To improve accountability, the Chief Minister instructed departments to consider a contractor’s past record of timely project execution while awarding new tenders. Contractors with a history of delays may face restrictions in securing future government work.
During the meeting, Fadnavis reviewed the progress of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project and directed officials to strengthen local industries operating within the area. He suggested exploring State GST concessions to encourage entrepreneurs and facilitate the formalization of Dharavi’s informal economy.
The Chief Minister also called for faster implementation of the BDD Chawl redevelopment projects in Worli, Naigaon and N.M. Joshi Marg. Authorities were instructed to provide rental compensation to eligible residents, take possession of existing structures and begin redevelopment work without delay.
Several major transport infrastructure projects were also reviewed. Fadnavis directed officials to establish milestone-based targets for the Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel Project and reiterated that the Goregaon-Mulund Twin Tunnel Project should be completed by January 2029 to improve east-west connectivity and reduce travel time across Mumbai.
The state government further decided to accelerate land acquisition for the Virar-Alibag Multimodal Corridor. Reviewing projects in Pune, the Chief Minister ordered the speedy availability of land for the Pune Ring Road and the Mula-Mutha River Rejuvenation Project. He also recommended introducing an integrated ticketing system for Pune Metro to improve commuter convenience as the network expands.
Additionally, officials were instructed to resolve pending issues affecting the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Water Supply Scheme to ensure reliable water supply to residents.

The review covered several major infrastructure projects, including Mumbai Metro Lines 2B, 4, 5, 6, 7A and 9; Pune Metro Line 3 and the Pimpri-Chinchwad to Nigdi extension; the Sewri-Worli Elevated Corridor; Goregaon-Mulund Link Road; Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel; Bandra-Versova Sea Link; Virar-Alibag Multimodal Corridor; Pune Ring Road; Mula-Mutha River Rejuvenation Project; Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Water Supply Scheme; BDD Chawl Redevelopment Projects; and the Dharavi Redevelopment Project.
