Murlidhar Mohol vs Ajit Pawar: Maharashtra Olympic Association Elections Heat Up
Mumbai, 20th October 2025: The upcoming Maharashtra Olympic Association (MOA) elections have emerged as a key focus in the state’s sports circles, setting the stage for a direct contest between Mahayuti allies, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar have both filed nominations for the MOA president’s post. The final day to withdraw nominations was October 18, but neither candidate stepped back.
Pawar, who has held the post unopposed for the past three terms, now faces a formidable challenge from Mohol. While Pawar is contesting through the Kho Kho Association, Mohol is entering the fray via the Wrestling Association.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Mohol emphasized the non-political nature of the elections. “This is not a rivalry but a democratic process within the sports fraternity,” said the Pune MP. “The election will be conducted in a friendly and sportive atmosphere. Mahayuti politics and sports are two separate matters, and this contest should not be viewed through a political lens.”
Elections Beyond the President’s Post
Alongside the president’s position, elections will also be held for 20 other posts, including vice presidents, secretary general, treasurer, joint secretaries, and executive members. A total of 60 voters—two representatives from each of the 30 associations affiliated with the state Olympic body—will cast their votes. The MOA elections are held every four years.
