Kiren Rijiju Congratulates Appointment Of Four High Court Chief Justices

Delhi, 12th February 2023: Today, the Central Government has given the green signal to the appointment of four High Court Chief Justices. Giving information on Twitter, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said that Chief Justices were appointed in four High Courts today. He wrote, “Following the relevant provisions under the Constitution of India, the following judges are appointed as Chief Justices of various High Courts. I wish them all the best.”

On Sunday, Chief Justices were appointed in four High Courts. Gujarat High Court Justice Sonia Giridhar Gokani has been appointed as its chief justice. Justice Sandeep Mehta of the Rajasthan High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.

Justice Jaswant Singh of the Orissa High Court has been made the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court. Justice N Kotishwar Singh of the Gauhati High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.

Recently, the Ministry of Law and Justice approved the elevation of Justice Sonia Giridhar as the Acting Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court. Justice Giridhar will be the first woman to head the Gujarat High Court.

The Union of India also notified the appointment of two more judges to the Supreme Court of India on 10th February. The government has notified the appointment of Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Arvind Kumar as judges of the Supreme Court. With their appointment, the apex court will have a full working strength of 34 judges.

The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the names of Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Arvind Kumar for elevation as Supreme Court judges on 31st January 2023. While recommending their names, the collegium also detailed the parameters discussed, adding that the elevation of Justice Rajesh Bindal was a unanimous decision of all collegium members.

At the same time, the name of Justice Arvind Kumar was agreed upon by all the members except Justice KM Joseph. The SC collegium, comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dhananjay Y. Chandrachud along with Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, K.M. Joseph, MR. Shah, Ajay Rastogi and Sanjeev Khanna, recommended names.
