Kejriwal Sent to Judicial Custody for 15 Days in Delhi Excise Policy Case

New Delhi, April 1st, 2024: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, implicated in a money laundering case linked to the liquor policy scandal, was brought before the Rouse Avenue Court today, Monday, following the conclusion of his Enforcement Directorate (ED) remand. He has been sent to 15 days of judicial custody, with arrangements made for him to be held in Tihar Jail. Previously, the court had extended Kejriwal’s ED custody until April 1.

The Enforcement Directorate arrested Kejriwal on March 21. Upon the expiry of the remand period, a team from the prosecution office presented Kejriwal before Special Judge Kaveri Baweja at Rouse Avenue Court. Before this, the court had extended Kejriwal’s custody by four days until March 28. There are speculations about whether the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will seek his custody after the ED.

Earlier, Kejriwal, apprehended on March 21, was brought before the ED on March 22, where the court granted him six days of custody. The ED has accused Kejriwal of demanding a bribe of ₹100 crore from liquor traders in exchange for changes in the excise policy. It’s alleged that this sum was utilized in the legislative assemblies of Goa and Punjab. Kejriwal has challenged both his ED arrest and custody in the High Court, with the case slated for hearing on April 3. Notably, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh are already in judicial custody.
