Hijab-Wearing Woman Can Become India’s PM, Says AIMIM Chief Owaisi

Solapur (Maharashtra), 10th January 2026: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday said that a day would come when a girl wearing a hijab would become the Prime Minister of India, asserting that the country’s Constitution guarantees equal rights to every citizen irrespective of religion. He made the remarks while addressing a public rally in Solapur.

Owaisi said that while the Constitution of Pakistan allows only a person from a particular religion to become the Prime Minister, the Indian Constitution drafted by Dr B R Ambedkar gives every Indian citizen the right to hold the highest constitutional posts, including Prime Minister, Chief Minister, and Mayor. He alleged that certain political parties were spreading hatred against Muslims and claimed that such politics would not last long.

The AIMIM chief further stated that those who promote hatred against Muslims would eventually face an end. He said that once love and harmony become common, people would realise how hatred had been injected into their minds. Owaisi is currently campaigning in Maharashtra ahead of the upcoming civic body elections.

Reacting to Owaisi’s statement, Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Nitesh Rane criticised him, saying such remarks would not be tolerated. Speaking to the media, Rane said that those aspiring to hold top positions should go to Islamic countries, adding that Owaisi’s comments were unacceptable in what he termed a Hindu nation.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also responded, stating that while the Constitution does not prevent anyone from becoming Prime Minister, Owaisi should first demonstrate inclusivity within his own party. He challenged the AIMIM chief to appoint a Pasmanda Muslim or a hijab-wearing woman as the party’s national president.

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said there is no constitutional restriction on who can become Prime Minister, but maintained that India is rooted in Hindu civilisation. He added that he believes the country’s Prime Minister will always be a Hindu.

Owaisi’s remarks come amid heightened political activity ahead of elections in 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, scheduled for January 15. The AIMIM has fielded candidates in several civic bodies, and Owaisi has been actively campaigning across the state.
