Amit Shah’s Statement Not Considered Wrong By Election Commission
Delhi, 10th December 2022: The Election Commission has not considered Home Minister Amit Shah’s remark that ‘a lesson was taught in 2002’ during the campaign for the assembly elections in Gujarat wrong. The Election Commission has accepted that the model code of conduct has not been violated due to this comment. After going through the report of the Chief Electoral Officer of the State and taking legal opinion, the Election Commission concluded that the reference to action against ‘miscreants’ was not in violation of the provisions of the Election Code.
A former bureaucrat had approached the Election Commission last month over a statement made by Amit Shah at an election rally in Mahudha town of Kheda district. At the rally, Shah said, “During the Congress rule in Gujarat (before 1995), communal riots used to happen on a large scale. Congress used to incite people of different communities and castes to fight against each other. Through such riots, the Congress strengthened its vote bank and did injustice to a large section of the society.”
Union Minister Amit Shah also said during the rally, “After teaching them a lesson in 2002, these elements left that path (violence).”
