PM Narendra Modi Expresses Condolences as Stampede Strikes Maha Kumbh Grounds

Mumbai, 29th January 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences following a stampede at the Maha Kumbh fairgrounds earlier today, where casualties are feared.

PM Modi wished a swift recovery for approximately 30 women injured when massive crowds breached barricades, triggering the stampede. He assured that local authorities are actively assisting those affected.

Since the incident, PM Modi has spoken to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath four times, reaffirming the Centre’s full support in handling the situation.

The stampede occurred about a kilometre from the Triveni Sangam ghat on the sacred occasion of Mauni Amavasya, a day when nearly 10 crore devotees are expected to take a holy dip.

Following the tragedy, Akharas called off their processions and postponed their scheduled holy dip.

Mauni Amavasya’s Amrit Snan is considered the most sacred ritual of the Maha Kumbh. This year, the event holds exceptional spiritual significance due to a rare celestial phenomenon known as ‘Triveni Yog,’ which takes place once every 144 years.

Maha Kumbh 2025 has already seen over 15 crore pilgrims taking a holy dip in the past 17 days. On Tuesday alone, 4.80 crore devotees participated in the ritual—surpassing the 3.5 crore recorded on Makar Sankranti’s Amrit Snan, according to the Uttar Pradesh government.

The grand festival began on January 13 and will continue until February 26.
