Parliament Passes Key Bills Amid Protests, Debate Skipped in Monsoon Session
New Delhi, 22nd August 2025: During the recently concluded Monsoon Session, the Lok Sabha approved 12 bills and the Rajya Sabha passed 15 bills, largely without debate, despite ongoing protests from opposition members.
Among the significant legislations cleared by the Lower House was the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, which aims to replace the century-old Indian Ports Act of 1908. The bill is expected to modernise the management and regulation of India’s port infrastructure.
The Upper House, meanwhile, approved several high-profile bills amid the noise of continuous opposition protests. One notable legislation was the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, which seeks to safeguard citizens from substantial financial losses in online betting and ensure responsible gaming practices.
Another important measure, the National Sports Governance Bill, passed by both Houses without discussion, intends to formalise recognition of national sports bodies and regulate their administration, aiming to improve transparency and accountability in sports governance.
Other bills cleared during the session included the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Goa Assembly Constituencies, the Merchant Shipping Bill, and amendments to the Income Tax Act.
A senior parliamentary official noted, “Despite opposition protests, the government pushed through several key legislations, citing the urgent need for modernisation, regulation, and citizen protection. Debate was limited due to repeated disruptions in both Houses.”
