Government Signals Potential Changes to Agniveer Scheme: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh Speaks Out

Pune, 28 March 2024: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh hinted at potential changes to the Agniveer Scheme during a recent interview with a private television channel. The scheme, launched by the Modi Government on June 14, 2022, aims to strengthen the armed forces by enlisting young individuals as Agniveers for a four-year term.

Singh emphasized the government’s dedication to securing the future of Agniveers, saying, “Our aim is to ensure the welfare of our youth.” Singh also affirmed the government’s readiness to adapt the scheme if necessary, stating, “We are open to making adjustments to the scheme as required.”

Participants in the Agniveer recruitment scheme are eligible for a number of benefits, such as pension, gratuity, and access to medical schemes that are comparable to those for ex-servicemen. Nevertheless, during their service, Agniveers are not eligible for benefits like Military Service Pay and Dearness Allowance and do not become ex-servicemen. They do, however, receive stipends for travel, uniforms, and rations, with specific areas receiving priority for recruitment. Opposition quarters have criticised the plan, voicing concerns about how it handles youth employment. Critics contend that the Agniveer Scheme provides young people with temporary work, leading to requests for a review and possible modifications.
