Fifth Edition Of Kochi Muziris Biennale Inaugurated By Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan

Kochi, 13th December 2022: The fifth edition of the Kochi Muziris Biennale (KMB) 2022-23 has been flagged off by Kerala chief minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, on Monday. The international contemporary art festival’s theme for this time is – In Our Veins Flow Ink and Fire. The curator is an artist and writer from Singapore – Shubigi Rao.

Set up at multiple venues in Kochi, the biennial is for four months till it ends on 10th April. It will showcase over 200 artworks of 90 artists from about 40 countries across 14 venues. All venues are open from 10 AM to 6 PM every day. Tickets for the same are available online and at Aspinwall House.

Vijayan, during the inauguration, said, “This is a time of increasing cultural invasions. This biennale will interact with our history and culture. This is the time when there is a reactionary movement of certain forces trying to impose one language, one culture, and one dress by suppressing diversity. The Biennale will give strength to the resistance against such moves. Kochi, which embraces all kinds of cultures, is a fitting venue for the biennale.”

Some major programmes include –

Students’ Biennale: From Dec 13, VKL Warehouse
Invitations Programme: Dec 13, Tkm, David Hall, Kashi Townhouse, Dutch Warehouse
IDAM art exhibition: Dec 14, Durbar Hall Art Gallery
Music of Muziris – Sithara’s Project Malabaricus: Dec 14, Parade Ground

This is the 10th year of the KMB, which began in 2012. In 2018, around six lakh people visited the biennale. This time, the KMB is being staged after a four-year gap caused by the pandemic.
