Father of India’s Green Revolution, M S Swaminathan, Passes Away at 98; PM Modi and JP Nadda Offer Condolences

Chennai, 28th September 2023 : M S Swaminathan, the venerable agricultural scientist renowned as the “Father of Green Revolution” in India, has sadly passed away at the age of 98 after an extended period of illness. His groundbreaking work in the realm of agriculture had a profound impact on India’s food production.

Sources within the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation confirmed that the distinguished agricultural scientist had been under treatment for an age-related ailment. M S Swaminathan’s contribution to the promotion of paddy cultivation in the country remains remarkable. He played a pivotal role in the development of high-yielding paddy varieties, a transformative initiative that greatly benefited farmers in regions such as Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.

Throughout his illustrious career, M S Swaminathan held various pivotal positions. He served as the Director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute from 1961 to 1972, later assuming the roles of Director General of ICR and Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education from 1972 to 1979. Additionally, he served as the Principal Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture from 1979 to 1980.

Recognized for his unparalleled contributions, M S Swaminathan received the first-ever food award in 1987, cementing his status as an agricultural luminary. He was also honored with prestigious accolades including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, acknowledging Swaminathan’s unwavering commitment to the nation. He expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “I am profoundly saddened by the loss of Dr. MS Swaminathan Ji. During a pivotal period in our nation’s history, his pioneering contributions to agriculture transformed the lives of countless individuals and ensured food security for our nation.”
JP Nadda, President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), also paid homage, remarking, “He played a pivotal role in advancing India’s agricultural capabilities, liberating millions from the grip of hunger, and ushering in a transformative change in the lives of our people. His unwavering dedication to advancing India’s scientific progress and innovation will remain a source of inspiration for our scientific community. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and well-wishers. Om Shanti.”
