Eknath Shinde Government Will Have To Pay Rs 12,000 Crores : NGT

Mumbai, 11th September 2022: The National Green Tribunal has imposed a fine on the Eknath Shinde government of Maharashtra. The amount of the fine is Rs 12000 crore. This fine has been imposed for non-compliance with environmental norms.

 

 

 

The National Green Tribunal has imposed a hefty fine on the Eknath Shinde government of Maharashtra. The amount of the fine is Rs 12000 crore. This fine has been imposed on the Shinde government for non-compliance with environmental norms.

 

 

 

Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel has imposed this fine under Section 15 of the National Green Arbitration Act. The matter is about harming the environment and not doing solid and liquid waste management properly. For the last eight years, the Maharashtra government has not done the necessary work for solid waste management and liquid waste management.

 

 

The Green Arbitrator has said that the deadline given in this regard has also expired. Continuous damage to the environment should be stopped in the future. The green arbiter said that therefore the damage done to the environment in the past should be compensated. The Maharashtra government has been fined Rs 10,820 crore for default in liquid waste management and Rs 1,200 crore for failure in solid waste management. The Green Tribunal has said that the Maharashtra government should deposit the fine amount in the next two months and it should be used for environmental protection as per the directions of the Chief Secretary.

 

 

 

Suggestions have also been made that the amount should be spent on waste management, sewage management, and reuse system, quality monitoring system, sludge management in rural areas for environmental protection. On the other hand, the Green Tribunal has said that solid waste management projects should be set up at 84 places in the state. It remains to be seen what role the Maharashtra government plays after the decision of the National Green Tribunal. The Green Arbitrator has also fixed the responsibility of the Chief Secretary in the decision. The green intermediary has suggested that a time-bound program should be implemented to avoid damage to the environment.
