BJP MLA Rahul Narvekar Elected Unopposed as Maharashtra Assembly Speaker

Mumbai, 8th December 2024: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Rahul Narvekar was elected as the Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly on Sunday without opposition, as the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition chose not to submit any nominations for the position.

Narvekar had previously served as Speaker in the last Assembly, where he oversaw the disqualification cases involving members of the Shiv Sena and NCP.

On Saturday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis took his oath as a member of the legislative assembly on the first day of the three-day special session. Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar also took their oaths as MLAs during the same session.

The oath was administered by the pro-tem Speaker of the legislative assembly, Kalidas Kolambkar, as the session began at 11 am.

The results of the November 20 Maharashtra Assembly elections were announced on November 23, with the Mahayuti alliance—comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP—securing a decisive victory by winning 230 out of 288 seats. The new government was sworn in on December 5, with Fadnavis returning as chief minister, while Shinde and Pawar were sworn in as deputy chief ministers.
