79% Railway Tracks Now Cleared for 110 kmph and Above Speeds
New Delhi, 18th December 2025: Indian Railways has significantly expanded the speed potential of its track network over the last 11 years, with 79 per cent of tracks now capable of supporting speeds of 110 kmph and above as of November 2025, compared to 40 per cent in March 2014, according to official data shared in Parliament.
The information was provided by Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
Data shows that track length supporting speeds below 110 kmph has reduced sharply from 47,897 km, or 60.4 per cent of the network in 2014, to 21,936 km, or 20.7 per cent, in 2025. During the same period, track length with speed potential between 110 kmph and 130 kmph increased from 26,409 km (33.3 per cent) to 60,726 km (57.5 per cent).
Tracks capable of handling speeds of 130 kmph and above also saw a substantial rise, from 5,036 km (6.3 per cent) in 2014 to 23,010 km (21.8 per cent) in 2025.
The total length of railway tracks increased from 79,342 km in 2014 to 1,05,672 km in 2025.
According to the reply, the improvement in speed potential has been achieved through multiple track upgradation measures. These include the use of 60 kg rails, wider base concrete sleepers, thick web switches, longer rail panels, H-beam sleepers, modern track renewal and maintenance machines, interlocking of level crossing gates, and intensified monitoring of track geometry.
The ministry stated that these measures were implemented across the network as part of ongoing track modernisation efforts over the last decade.
