1,698 Stone-Pelting Cases Reported on Trains Across India in Six Months; 665 Arrested

New Delhi, 21st January 2026: Indian Railways recorded 1,698 incidents of stone pelting on trains across its network between July and December 2025, resulting in the arrest of 665 persons, according to official data. The incidents were reported from almost all railway zones, highlighting the scale and spread of the issue.

Northern Railway reported the highest number of stone-pelting cases at 363 during the six-month period. It was followed by East Central Railway with 219 cases, South Central Railway with 140 cases, North Central Railway with 126 cases, Western Railway with 116 cases and Southern Railway with 108 cases.

Other zones also reported multiple incidents, including Central Railway (96), South Western Railway (80), West Central Railway (77), Eastern Railway (71), North Frontier Railway (67), North Western Railway (55), South Eastern Railway (51), South East Central Railway (51), East Coast Railway (50), North Eastern Railway (25) and Konkan Railway (3).

Railway officials stated that arrests were made in connection with these incidents as part of ongoing enforcement drives. Surveillance measures have been strengthened and patrolling increased in identified vulnerable sections, leading to quicker detection of offenders and subsequent legal action.

Indian Railways has reiterated that stone pelting on trains is a criminal offence that poses risks to passenger safety, railway staff and public property. Legal action, including registration of criminal cases and arrests under relevant laws, is being taken against those involved.

Railway authorities have also appealed to citizens to cooperate with enforcement agencies and assist in ensuring safe and uninterrupted train operations across the country.
