Supreme Court Receives Two New Judges

Delhi, 13th February 2023: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Monday administered the oath of office to two new judges of the country’s top court. President Draupadi Murmu has signed the warrant of appointment of Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Arvind Kumar in the Supreme Court. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Supreme Court at 10.30 am on Monday. After this, new judges were included in the Supreme Court. On Friday, Law Minister Kiren Rijiju announced new appointments to the Supreme Court on Twitter.

The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the names of judges to the Center for elevation on January 31. Last week, five judges took oath as Supreme Court judges following their promotion. After the swearing-in ceremony, the Supreme Court achieved its full strength of 34 judges, including the Chief Justice of India.

The retirement age of High Court judges is 62 years, while that of Supreme Court judges is 65 years. Justice Bindal was born on 16 April 1961. He was to demit office in April this year after turning 62. However, his elevation to the Supreme Court has now extended his tenure for three years. Justice Kumar was born on July 14, 1962. He will turn 61 in July 2023.

Justice Bindal took over as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court on October 11, 2021. Justice Bindal did his LLB from Kurukshetra University in 1985 and thereafter started his career in Punjab and Haryana High Court in September 1985. He was elevated as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on March 22, 2006. As per information available on the Allahabad High Court website, Justice Bindal has disposed of around 80,000 cases during his tenure at the Punjab and Haryana High Courts.

The parent cadre of Justice Arvind Kumar is the Karnataka High Court. Justice Kumar started his career as a lawyer in 1987. He was appointed as an Additional Central Government Standing Counsel in the Karnataka High Court in 1999. Thereafter, he was appointed as the Assistant Solicitor General of India in 2005. He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court on June 26, 2009. Subsequently, was elevated as a permanent judge on December 7, 2012. He was serving as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court from October 13, 2021.
