Railway News: 89,780 Crore Rs Worth of Rail Projects Sanctioned in Maharashtra; Over 2,360 km Network Commissioned
Mumbai, 8th August 2025: A total of 38 railway projects in Maharashtra comprising 11 new lines, 2 gauge conversions, and 25 doubling or multi‑tracking schemes have been sanctioned, covering 5,098 km at an estimated cost of ₹89,780 crore. Of this, 2,360 km have already been commissioned, with ₹39,407 crore expended by March 2025.
Commissioning Pace and Budget Allocation
Between 2009–14, infrastructure funding averaged ₹1,171 crore per year, whereas for 2025–26, the allocation has surged to ₹23,778 crore, marking a more than 20‑fold increase.
Rail infrastructure commissioning has accelerated too: from 292 km (≈58 km/year) during 2009–14 to 2,292 km (≈208 km/year) in 2014–25-over three times faster.

Strategic Projects and Freight Connectivity
100% land acquisition completed for the high‑speed bullet train in Maharashtra; construction of bridges and aqueducts is underway.
The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) traverses 178 km in the state; 76 km between New Gholvad and New Vaitarna is commissioned, with remaining works in progress. Its link to JNPT is expected to enhance cargo movement to Delhi NCR.
Sanction Trends & Zonal Oversight
In the past three fiscal years (FY 2022‑23 to FY 2024‑25) and the current financial year, 27 multi‑tracking projects totalling 1,991 km and costing around ₹47,126 crore have been sanctioned in full or part in Maharashtra.
