Pune: Resignations Continue in State Commission of Maharashtra for Backward Class Amid Maratha Reservation Debate

Pune, 5th December 2023: The State Commission of Maharashtra for Backward Class in Maharashtra is facing a series of resignations, with Laxman Hake, a member with a background in Yoga, being the latest to step down. This marks the third resignation from the commission in just a month, causing concerns about the ongoing issue of the Maratha reservation in Maharashtra.

The controversy surrounding the Maratha reservation has prompted Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to request the Commission to conduct a study proving the social backwardness of the Maratha community. The commission, in response to the directive, initiated the study, and its ongoing meeting session in Pune has witnessed a series of resignations.

The sequence of resignations started with Prof. Dr. Sanjiv Sonawane, who cited the overwhelming volume of work as a reason for stepping down. Following this, Balaji Killarikar resigned due to disagreements over the demand for a survey of all communities in a meeting held last week.

Now, Laxman Hake has submitted his resignation, citing ideological differences within the commission. Hake, who has been a member since June 2021, conveyed his decision through a resignation letter, copies of which were sent to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and the Chairman of the Commission.
