TMC Accuses BJP of Politicizing Doctor’s Tragic Death; Releases Video Refuting Bribe Claims
Kolkata, 6th September 2024: The Trinamool Congress has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other parties for allegedly exploiting the tragic death of a female doctor from a state-run hospital on August 9 for political purposes.
On Thursday, TMC leader and minister Shashi Panja accused the BJP of using the tragedy to gain political advantage rather than seeking justice. The Trinamool Congress also released a video during a press conference to address allegations that the Kolkata Police had offered bribes to the victim’s parents.
The video, reportedly recorded last month, shows the father of the deceased trainee doctor refuting claims of a bribe. He stated, “We have not been approached with any bribe offers from the police. These rumours are completely false. I urge everyone to focus on securing justice for our daughter rather than spreading lies.”
This video was released following accusations by the victim’s parents that a senior police official had offered them money when handing over their daughter’s body. The father also alleged that the bribe was part of a larger cover-up attempt by the Kolkata Police and claimed they were not allowed to view their daughter’s body before it was taken for a post-mortem.
The TMC has accused the media and BJP of spreading falsehoods to further politicize the tragic incident. Shashi Panja criticized the BJP’s IT cell for disseminating “fake videos” and emphasized that the victim’s family seeks justice and should not be drawn into political conflicts.
The death of the doctor has sparked nationwide protests and led to a strike by junior doctors in West Bengal.
