Rajnath Singh Announces Milestone Reforms in India’s Defense Sector for 2025
New Delhi, 1st January 2025: India has declared 2025 as the “Year of Reforms” in its defence sector, aiming for “unprecedented” strides in strengthening the country’s security and sovereignty to address 21st-century challenges.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the “Year of Reforms” as a significant milestone in the modernization of the armed forces. During a meeting chaired by Singh on Wednesday, the focus was placed on improving jointness and integration, with an emphasis on establishing integrated theatre commands.
The meeting also highlighted the need to develop tactics, techniques, and procedures for future warfare as part of these reforms. Additionally, it was decided that efforts should be directed toward positioning India as a reliable exporter of defence products, encouraging research and development, and promoting collaborations between Indian industries and international original equipment manufacturers.
The reforms are designed to implement integrated theatre commands, foster synergy across the three armed services, and evolve the military into a technologically advanced, combat-ready force.
The overarching objective of the defence ministry’s initiatives is to streamline defence acquisition processes, enhance collaboration among key stakeholders, break down silos, eliminate inefficiencies, and optimize resource utilization.
This announcement follows Singh’s report that India’s defence exports have surged to over Rs 21,000 crore, a significant rise from Rs 2,000 crore a decade ago. “Our defence exports have crossed Rs 21,000 crore today, up from Rs 2,000 crore a decade ago. We have set an export target of Rs 50,000 crore by 2029,” Singh stated.
He reaffirmed that the Modi government is committed to improving integration and cooperation across the three services.
