Pune: Committee Concludes Sassoon Hospital Probe in Less Than 48 Hours, Action Expected
Pune, May 29th, 2024: Two senior doctors from Sassoon General Hospital, Pune, were arrested in connection with the tampering of a blood sample from a minor involved in the Kalyani Nagar Porsche Incident, which resulted in the deaths of two youths. The minor was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, and the tampered blood sample was crucial in determining his intoxication level. In response, a three-member committee, led by Mumbai’s JJ Hospital Dean, Dr. Pallavi Saple, was appointed to conduct an inquiry. Remarkably, the inquiry concluded within 48 hours. Media reports suggest that action will be taken today, as the report indicates serious misconduct.
According to media reports, the report submitted by the three-member committee to the Medical Education Commissioner alleges severe misconduct by two doctors and one peon at the hospital. Dr. Ajay Taware and Dr. Shrihari Halnor, both Class 1 and Class 2 officers respectively, along with peon Atul Ghatkamble, are at risk of facing action. This information is being briefed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
The committee, tasked by the administration to investigate illegal conduct at Sassoon, is chaired by JJ Hospital’s Dean, Dr. Pallavi Saple, alongside Dr. Gajanan Chavan and Dr. Sudhi Chaudhary. However, Dr. Saple has faced corruption charges in the past, prompting questions about the selection of committee members.
