San Francisco, 5th January 2023: On Wednesday, (January 4), microblogging service Twitter stated that it will increase the political advertising it permits in the coming weeks.

From its Twitter Safety account, the platform announced, “We believe that cause-based advertising can facilitate a public conversation around important topics. Today, we’re relaxing our ad policy for cause-based ads in the US. We also plan to expand the political advertising we permit in the coming weeks.”

It further informed, “Moving forward, we will align our advertising policy with that of TV and other media outlets. As with all policy changes, we will first ensure that our approach to reviewing and approving content protects people on Twitter. We’ll share more details as this work progresses.”

Several users expressed their opinions on the said announcement.

One user said, “Cool. So you’re setting yourselves up to operate as a media outlet rather than a tech platform. I presume that means you now need to carefully vet advertising to ensure you don’t run afoul of libel and other laws media outlets are beholden to?”

Another user tweeted, “Let me see, so you will check all politically based ads before accepting the huge sums of money regardless of which party they are from? and alert the FCC if a party attempts to get an ad aired that would otherwise violate voting regulations?”

It should be noted that Twitter officially banned all political advertisements from its platform in November 2019, weeks after former CEO Jack Dorsey announced that the microblogging site would no longer permit such advertisements.
