Renaming Movement Gains Momentum: Shiv Sena Initiates Name Change for Mohammad Wadi in Pune

Hadapsar, 25th November 2023: In the wake of a change in power dynamics in the state, the push to rename cities has now extended to the suburbs of Pune. A Shiv Sena group has spearheaded a movement to rename Mohammad Wadi, a suburb in the Hadapsar assembly constituency, as Mahadevwadi. Raigad District MLA Bharatshet Gogawale, of Shiv Sena (Shinde group) in the legislature has submitted a clear demand to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. This initiative comes after the Maharashtra Cabinet’s resolution to rename Osmanabad as Dharashiv and Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar during the Mahavikas Aghadi government.

Hadapsar assembly constituency has long been regarded as a stronghold for Shiv Sena. Nana Bhangire, Shiv Sena’s city chief, consistently advocated for renaming Mohammad Wadi, a suburb in this assembly constituency. Following up on these demands, he submitted a letter to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde seeking the renaming of Mahadevwadi to Mahadevwadi.

The Chief Minister’s office has acknowledged this letter, and Pune Municipal Commissioner Administrator Vikram Kumar has been instructed to provide immediate feedback and a report on the matter.

In a related development, plans are underway to erect a full-length statue of Lord Shri Ram in the Handewadi area of Hadapsar. The proposal received a positive response from the state’s urban development department. The initiative for the statue was put forth by Nana Bhangire, the then Shiv Sena corporator and current city chief.
