Guwahati, 15th April 2023: The first AIIMS in the Northeast, built at Rs 1,123 crore in Guwahati, Assam, was inaugurated today (April 15), by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In addition to Assamese citizens, the super-specialty hospital will also provide healthcare for residents of other northeastern states.
Additionally, he also inaugurated three medical colleges in Nalbari, Nagaon, and Kokrajhar.
The three medical institutions’ 24 undergraduate departments in the 500-bed tertiary care teaching hospitals would initially accept 100 MBBS students each year, bringing Assam’s total MBBS enrollment to 1500.
He also laid the foundation for the Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHII), a cooperative project of the state government and IIT Guwahati.
The Prime Minister also announced the distribution of 1.1 billion Ayushman cards to users, who can use them to get cashless healthcare benefits for medical treatment up to Rs. 5 lakh.
