Opinion Poll Predicts Mahayuti Alliance Likely to Retain Power in Maharashtra
Mumbai, 11th November 2024: An opinion poll by survey agency Matrize has predicted that the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra is likely to retain power in the upcoming Assembly elections, scheduled for November 20. The survey, conducted between October 10 and November 9, included 1,09,628 respondents.
According to the survey, the Mahayuti is expected to win between 145 and 165 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly. In contrast, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), consisting of the Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and NCP, is projected to secure 106 to 126 seats.
The Mahayuti is also forecasted to outperform the opposition in terms of vote share, with an anticipated 47% of the vote compared to 41% for the MVA. Other parties are expected to garner around 12% of the vote share.
The survey indicates that the BJP is likely to perform strongly in Western Maharashtra (48%), Vidarbha (48%), and Thane-Konkan (52%). On the other hand, the Congress-led MVA is expected to have better prospects in North Maharashtra and Marathwada, where they are projected to secure 47% and 44% of the vote, respectively.
If the survey results are accurate, it would mark a significant blow to the MVA, which had been the preferred choice of voters in the recent Lok Sabha elections. In May, the MVA won 31 out of 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, while the BJP-led NDA secured only 17 seats.
The BJP’s victory in the Haryana elections seems to have revitalized the Mahayuti’s momentum, while the MVA has struggled with issues related to seat-sharing and identifying a clear chief ministerial candidate. Despite these challenges, the MVA remains confident of its chances in the upcoming elections and is hopeful of forming a government.
These elections hold great significance, as recent political shifts have seen key regional players, including the Shiv Sena and NCP, undergo splits. Voting will take place on November 20, and results will be announced on November 23.
