Boycott of ABP Ananda, Republic, and TV9: Trinamool Congress’ Response to Media Criticism

Kolkata, 3rd September 2024: The Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, has accused the BJP and CPM of trying to incite unrest in West Bengal. Facing scrutiny over the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the ruling party has opted not to participate in TV debates on channels like ABP Ananda, Republic, and TV9, alleging these outlets promote ‘anti-Bengal’ narratives.

In a social media statement, the TMC emphasized that individuals appearing as party supporters on these channels are not authorized representatives.

Here’s the full statement from TMC:

“AITC has decided to refrain from sending its spokespersons to media channels such as ABP Ananda, Republic, and TV9 due to their ongoing ANTI-BENGAL agenda-driven PROPAGANDA. We recognize their need to cater to Delhi’s influential figures, especially in light of investigations and enforcement actions against their promoters and companies.

We urge the people of West Bengal not to be misled by individuals depicted as party supporters or sympathizers on these platforms during discussions or debates. These individuals do not represent our official position or stance.

The people of Bengal have consistently rejected this unholy BANGLA BIRODHI NEXUS and have always chosen TRUTH over PROPAGANDA!”

Reason for TMC’s Boycott of News Channels

The boycott decision follows a contentious TV debate where TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul clashed. During the debate, Dastidar’s comments led to controversy and an apology. Dastidar referred to Paul as a “saree maker,” which Paul defended as a point of pride. The BJP MLA accused the Mamata Banerjee government of harbouring criminals and neglecting women’s issues.

Additionally, Dastidar’s claim that medical students were coerced into compromising situations under the CPM government was met with strong criticism from women doctors.

Update on the Rape-Murder Case

In the case of the doctor’s rape and murder, accused Sanjay Roy has asserted his innocence, alleging he is being framed. Roy, who was arrested on August 10 based on CCTV footage and other evidence, maintained his innocence during a polygraph test. He contends that the victim was already unconscious when he entered the seminar hall and that he panicked and left without notifying the police. His lawyer suggested a potential security lapse might have allowed another perpetrator to commit the crime.
