Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov Meets External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, Discusses Various Topics

New Delhi, 1st March 2023: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, on Wednesday met his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the G-20 meeting in the national capital. During this, there was a detailed discussion between the two on issues related to bilateral cooperation, the Ukraine conflict, and G-20.

The Foreign Minister of Russia arrived in India on Tuesday night to attend the two-day meeting of G-20 foreign ministers. The meeting is taking place amid a growing confrontation between Russia and the West over the conflict in Ukraine.

Jaishankar tweeted that he had a detailed discussion with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the G-20 foreign ministers’ meeting. During this, exchanged views on issues related to bilateral cooperation and G-20. It is believed that the issue of Ukraine would also have been discussed between the two leaders.

On the occasion of Lavrov’s visit to India, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow considers the G-20 a prestigious forum for the world’s major economies, where balanced and consensus decisions should be made in the interests of all. “We support India’s presidency of the G-20 for its commitment to promoting a unifying agenda to restore faith in multi-layered democracy and prevent further fragmentation of the global economy,” it said in a statement.

The statement said Moscow shares the relevance of India’s stated priorities, which include accelerating progress towards the achievement of the Inclusive and Sustainable Development Goals, reforming multilateral institutions, and digital modernisation.

The statement said, “We support India’s efforts to strengthen systems and implement specific procedures to deal with natural disasters and launch startups.”

“We are ready to contribute significantly to the progress in all these areas. We look forward to working with our Indian partners to achieve the desired results. At the same time, we will firmly defend Russia’s fundamental interests. We will talk firmly and openly about the causes of the current serious problems in global politics and the economy,” the statement added.
