Rahul Gandhi Raises Questions on EC As INDIA Bloc MPs Face Detention

New Delhi, 6th October 2026: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi questioned the Election Commission on Tuesday over its refusal to meet opposition leaders as INDIA bloc MPs marched towards the poll body’s headquarters in New Delhi.

More than 300 opposition MPs participated in the march from Parliament towards the Election Commission office, demanding a meeting with the Election Commissioners and raising concerns over the electoral process. The march was stopped by police near NITI Aayog and Akashvani Bhavan.

Taking to X, Gandhi questioned why the Election Commissioners were not meeting the opposition leaders and why police were stopping and allegedly threatening them. He said the MPs represented crores of Indians and had marched to meet the poll body.

The protesters were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition parties have also raised objections over changes related to Form 6 and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

After being stopped, several opposition MPs staged a sit-in on the road. Gandhi and Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee climbed a police barricade, while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was initially taken to a police bus before joining Rahul Gandhi near the Akashvani Bhavan gate.

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda later entered the Akashvani Bhavan premises and sat under a tree while police asked them to vacate the area.

Several opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and TMC MPs Abhishek Banerjee and Derek O’Brien, were detained during the protest. Police cited prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the area.
