Pune Became Second Greenest City In Country; IGBC Provided ‘Platinum Certificate’ To PMC
Pune, 23rd April 2023: Being the cultural capital of Maharashtra and situated at the foothills of the Sahyadri mountain ranges, Pune is now gaining worldwide fame. Pune has been certified as the second ‘Green City’ in the country by getting ‘Platinum Ranking’ in the Green City Index. The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has given Pune a ‘Platinum Ranking’ certificate.
Anagha Paranjpe-Purohit, a city planning expert, informed that in the Green City Index, ratings are given in three categories namely platinum, gold and silver. Pune has got platinum rating for the first time and it has been certified as the second ‘green city’ in the country. Rajkot city has got this honor before that.
“The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had collected information on the works done to meet the criteria required for Green City Index rating and submitted it to the IGBC. Pimpri-Chinchwad city has also applied for this and soon it too will get the rating,” she added further.
Sulakshana Mahajan, urban planning scholar and architect said that the problem of environment has become serious due to urbanization and development works. Therefore, various concepts such as smart city, sustainable city are being implemented in the context of cities in the last few decades.
“In this, the importance of the concept of ‘Green City Index’ is being highlighted to improve pollution, climate change, lack of sustainable transport system etc. For this, new technologies and equipment have become available, through which information collection has become easier,” Mahajan added further.
