Nagpur: Distressed Farmer Attempts Suicide near Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan

Nagpur, 20th December 2023: A 29-year-old farmer from Yavatmal district, Maharashtra, made a harrowing attempt on his life near the Maharashtra Legislature complex.

Sachin Uttam Bahadare, a resident of Murat Jahangir in Mahagaon tehsil, consumed pesticide in a desperate act attributed to the burdens of crop loss and mounting debt.

The incident took place on Tuesday during the ongoing winter session of the Maharashtra Legislature at Vidhan Bhavan in Nagpur. Inspector Narendra Hivre of Sitabuldi police station reported that the farmer, Bahadare, arrived at the Samvidhan Chowk around 11 am, discreetly carrying a bottle of pesticide hidden under his shirt.

Quick response from the police on site averted a tragedy, as they apprehended Bahadare immediately. He was swiftly transported to Mayo Hospital, where he is currently under observation in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

According to Inspector Hivre, Bahadare had left a written statement expressing his distress over crop loss and the escalating burden of debts. The farmer’s attempt to end his life underscores the severe challenges faced by many in the agricultural sector, grappling with adverse weather conditions, crop failures, and financial woes.

The local authorities are conducting further investigations into the matter to understand the underlying causes and potential avenues for support.
