Municipal Elections In Maharashtra Delayed Pertaining To Ongoing Hearing In Court
Pune, 20th October 2022: Uncertainty about when the elections of 15 municipalities in the state, including Mumbai-Pune, will be held continues.
The Supreme Court ordered an appeal in the High Court against the decision taken by the state government regarding the ward formation (367 local self-governments, including 92 municipalities).
The hearing on the ‘OBC’ reservation in body elections was delayed.
Discussions have started that the elections will not be held in the next one and a half to two months.
The Supreme Court put forth a hearing regarding 367 local bodies, including 92 municipalities in August regarding ‘OBC’ reservation in elections. Two petitions were put forth which were heard on Wednesday.
An appeal was sought against the decision taken. This petition settled
has been removed, the petitioners to appeal to the High Court
has been told.
The term of 11 municipalities in the state, including Mumbai-Pune, ended on 15th March. It was speculated that the elections would be held by 30th November. As these petitions will now be heard after two weeks, the next hearing is likely to be delayed further. Therefore, it is predicted that the elections will not be held in one and a half to two months.
Municipalities where elections have been postponed –
Mumbai, Thane, Ulhasnagar, Vasai-Virar, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivali, Nashik, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Kolhapur, Amravati, Akola, Nagpur and Aurangabad are being looked after by the administrator. Except for Aurangabad, all the municipal elections have been prepared. Preparations are underway for the municipal elections of Latur, Parbhani, Chandrapur, Malegaon, Panvel, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Mira-Bhainder and Nanded-Waghala.
