Mulayam Singh Yadhav, Founder Of Samajwadi Party, Passes Away At Age 82
Gurugram, 10th October 2022: Samajwadi Party’s founder and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadhav passed away on 10th October 2022 at 82 at the Medanta Hospital, Gurugram. The revered patriarch of the party had a prolonged illness and was critical for the past few weeks. Akhilesh Yadav, Samajwadi Party Chief and son of Mulayam Singh Yadhav, announced the passing away of his father on the official Twitter account of the Samajwadi Party.
Offering his condolences, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav Ji was a remarkable personality. He was widely admired as a humble and grounded leader who was sensitive to people’s problems. He served people diligently and devoted his life towards popularising the ideals of Loknayak JP and Dr Lohia.”
According to the Indian Express, the veteran was a Lok Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh constituency. Mulayam Singh Yadav, the founder of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and three-time Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, rose to prominence in UP politics during intense social and political ferment following the 1970s. Mulayam, who emerged as a socialist leader, quickly established himself as an OBC stalwart, capturing political space vacated by the Congress. He took the oath of office as Uttar Pradesh’s 15th Chief Minister in 1989, the year the Congress was voted out of power. He was elected as the Chief Minister two more times after that – in 1993 and 2003. According to the Mint, he has also been elected 10 times as MLA and seven times as Lok Sabha MP.
He is survived by his sons, Akhilesh and Prateek.
