Maharashtra: Aurangabad Becomes ‘Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’ and Osmanabad Becomes ‘Dharashiv’, Notification Issued
Mumbai, 24th February 2023: The Central Government has approved the proposal by the Maharashtra State Government to rename Aurangabad as ‘Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’ and Osmanabad as ‘Dharashiv’.
In compliance with the letter dated February 24, 2023, from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, regarding the proposal to rename Aurangabad as ‘Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’, the General Administration Department of the Government of Maharashtra has issued a notification to change the name of the city, Taluka and District Aurangabad, Maharashtra State, to ‘Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’.
Similarly, in accordance with the Ministry of Home Affairs letter dated February 7, 2023, and the notification issued by the Government of Maharashtra, the name of the city, Taluka, and District Osmanabad, Maharashtra State, has been changed to ‘Dharashiv’.
The State Government had sent a letter to the Central Government on October 20, 2022, seeking final approval for the proposed name changes. The approval has now been granted.
The demand to rename Aurangabad and Osmanabad had been voiced for many years, and the State Government approved the proposal before forwarding it to the Central Government for final approval. The proposal was subsequently approved in the cabinet, and a resolution to this effect was also passed in the legislature.
