Maharashtra: Adani Group Enters Education Sector with School Acquisition in Chandrapur
Mumbai, 30th September 2024: The Adani Group is set to make its entry into the education sector in Maharashtra, following approval from the state’s School Education Department for the transfer of Mount Carmel Convent High School in Chandrapur. The school’s management will be officially handed over to the Adani Group within the next 15 days.
The School Education and Sports Department recently issued an order regarding the transfer. The school, located in Ghugus, Chandrapur district, caters to students from grades 1 to 12 and has been operated by Carmel Education Society. The proposal to transfer the self-financing English medium school to the Adani Group was submitted on 30th June 2024 and was approved by the state government within three months.
The transfer comes with conditions set by the Education Department. Notably, the school’s minimum student enrollment must be maintained, and there will be no changes to the government’s terms and conditions for the school. As the school is self-financing, the responsibility for the teaching and non-teaching staff will now rest with the Adani Group.
The new management is also required to adhere to all government rules, regulations, and orders concerning schools, staff, and both salary and non-salary subsidies. The state government reserves the right to revoke the transfer if future complaints or violations of these rules arise.
In addressing concerns over the transfer, School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar clarified that industry involvement in schools is intended to enhance facilities, not change school management. “Industrial groups are expected to assist in improving schools,” Kesarkar said. “There’s nothing wrong with a corporate group working to provide better educational opportunities for children.”
This development marks the Adani Group’s initial foray into the education sector, further expanding its reach across different industries.
