Maharashtra: Ahmednagar To Be Renamed Ahilya Devi Nagar, Announces Chief Minister
Ahmednagar, 31st May 2023: Following the renaming of Aurangabad and Osmanabad, the Maharashtra state government has made the decision to change the name of Ahmednagar. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has declared that the city will be known as Ahilya Devi Nagar henceforth.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during their visit to Ahmednagar on the occasion of Ahilya Devi Holkar Jayanti.
On Ahilya Devi Holkar’s birth anniversary, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid homage to Ahilya Devi Holkar at her birthplace in Chondi, Jamkhed taluka of Ahmednagar district. During the subsequent meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis proposed renaming Ahmednagar to Ahilya Devi Nagar. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde promptly approved the proposal.
The demand for renaming Ahmednagar as Ahilya Devi Nagar had been put forth by BJP MLAs Gopichand Padalkar and Ram Kadam. Yesterday, Rohit Pawar also urged the state government to consider the name change for Ahmednagar.
Previously, the state government had renamed Aurangabad as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad as Dharashiv. Now, following suit with these two cities, Ahmednagar is set to undergo a name change.
