Silchar Medical College Retracts Controversial Advisory on Female Staff Following Backlash
Guwahati, 14th August 2024: The Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in Assam has retracted its controversial advisory that suggested female staff should “maintain emotional composure” while on duty and avoid drawing “unwanted attention” after facing widespread criticism.
The advisory was issued following the rape and murder of a junior female doctor at a Kolkata hospital. The notice, which was directed particularly at female staff, was introduced on Monday by the principal-cum-chief superintendent of the government-run institution to “improve the safety and security” of its female doctors, students, and healthcare workers.
The advisory recommended that women avoid poorly lit and isolated areas, minimize late-night campus departures, and adhere to hostel regulations. It also urged female staff to stay emotionally composed and vigilant, suggesting that they should interact politely with the public to avoid unwanted attention.
The Junior Doctors Association criticized the advisory as “outrageous” and claimed it did not address the fundamental issues faced by SMCH. The association called for specific safety measures, including improved lighting throughout the hospital, continuous security coverage, proper washroom facilities for doctors, and additional CCTV cameras in critical areas.
The tragic incident involving the junior doctor in Kolkata has sparked nationwide protests, especially within the medical community. In response, the Calcutta High Court has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the case.
