Supreme Court Reprimands Punjab Government Over Illegal Liquor Sale

Delhi, 5th December 2022: The Supreme Court pulled up the Punjab government over the rampant manufacture and sale of illicit liquor in the state today. The court said that the problem of drugs and alcohol in Punjab is a serious issue. Expressing displeasure with the government, the court said the Punjab government is only registering FIRs and is not taking further action.

The Supreme Court also expressed displeasure over the pace of anti-drug operations of the Punjab government. The court also asked the government to list specific steps taken to curb the menace of illicit liquor manufacturing. After this, the court raised the issue of border security. The court said Punjab is a border state, and if someone wanted to destroy the country, they would start from the borders.

The court further said the way the problem of drug addiction is increasing in Punjab, the youth will end up in a miserable state. People are dying of intoxication. The court said if illegal liquor is not banned, it can prove fatal in the coming times.

Questioning the Punjab government, the court asked where the money seized so far has been used. The court also said that the government should use this money for anti-drug campaigns. Finally, the court sternly claimed that 34,000 FIRs have been filed in two years in the state, but no one has been prosecuted.

Responding on behalf of the Punjab government, the ASG said that things are moving forward. They said that FIRs have been registered under section 302, and further action will be taken.
