Rahul Gandhi alleges “nexus” between PM Modi and Adani Group, questions PM’s response to his Lok Sabha questions and comments on his surname

New Delhi, 14th February 2023: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has escalated his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over allegations of a “nexus” between Modi and Gautam Adani, the Adani Group founder. Gandhi asked why Modi avoided answering his questions about Adani during a Lok Sabha session and instead made personal remarks about Gandhi’s surname.

Gandhi has written a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla with “supporting proof” to back his allegations, which were expunged from House records. The Lok Sabha Secretariat has asked Gandhi to respond by February 15 to notices given by BJP members regarding his remarks on Modi.

During a public meeting in his Lok Sabha constituency of Wayanad, Gandhi pointed out that Modi’s comment that “directly insulted” him by referring to his surname had not been expunged from the records. He said, “the Prime Minister of the country directly insults me, but his words are not taken off the record.” Gandhi has asked questions about Modi’s relationship with Adani and how Adani has grown so fast. However, Modi did not answer a single question and instead questioned why Gandhi was called Gandhi and not Nehru. Gandhi pointed out that his polite and respectful remarks were expunged from House records while Modi’s personal remarks were allowed to remain.

Gandhi also asked people to observe his and Modi’s body language during their respective speeches in Parliament. He said, “look at how many times he drank water, how his hand was shaking when he was drinking water, and you will understand everything.” Gandhi’s allegations against Modi and Adani Group come at a time when the group is facing a probe by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) over alleged overvaluation of coal imports. The DRI has alleged that the Adani Group inflated the value of coal imports to avail of higher power tariffs and siphoned off money to tax havens. However, the Adani Group has denied any wrongdoing.
