Rahul Gandhi Affirms Commitment to Democracy: Files Nomination for 2024 Lok Sabha Elections from Wayanad

New Delhi, 3rd April 2024: On Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi, a prominent figure in the Congress party, affirmed his commitment to the preservation of democracy in India, emphasizing that he and every Indian citizen will persist in this battle. His declaration came shortly after officially filing his nomination for the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections from the Wayanad constituency in Kerala.

“This election signifies more than a mere political contest; it symbolizes our collective endeavour to safeguard the essence of democracy against forces of hostility, dishonesty, and inequality that aim to stifle the voice of our nation,” Gandhi conveyed through a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

He pledged, “I, alongside every Indian citizen, shall not relent until this struggle is triumphant. Together, we will unite citizens from every corner of our vast nation, from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, and from Manipur to Mumbai, to fortify the unity of our diverse states.”

Earlier in the day, while addressing the public in Wayanad, Gandhi underscored the significance of this election as a battle for the democratic principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

In a thinly veiled critique directed at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government, Gandhi asserted, “On one side stand those who endeavour to dismantle our nation’s democratic fabric and constitutional integrity, while on the other side stand those who defend our Constitution and uphold the democratic ethos of our country.”

He unequivocally highlighted the contrasting positions, elucidating the assault on constitutional values and democratic norms perpetrated by certain factions.

Rahul Gandhi’s Commitments to Wayanad

Following his nomination from the Wayanad constituency, Gandhi reiterated his dedication to the constituents, addressing various local issues including human-wildlife conflicts. “I have consistently advocated for addressing Wayanad’s concerns on both national and global platforms,” he affirmed.

Expressing solidarity with the populace, Gandhi declared, “Whether it is the issue of human-wildlife conflict or the establishment of a medical college, I stand firmly with the people of Wayanad. Despite efforts to engage the government on the medical college matter, the progress has been lacking.”

He expressed confidence in resolving these challenges once a Congress-led government is established both at the national and state levels. Accompanied by his sister and party’s general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Gandhi filed his nomination after leading a vibrant roadshow in Kalpetta, Wayanad.

Addressing the crowd in Wayanad, Gandhi conveyed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as their Member of Parliament, underscoring his familial bond with the electorate. He expressed profound appreciation for the trust placed in him by the people of Wayanad.

Gandhi is set to contest the Wayanad seat against the CPI candidate Annie Raja, an ally of the INDIA alliance. Meanwhile, the BJP has nominated its state unit chief K Surendran for the constituency. The Lok Sabha Elections, spanning across the country, are scheduled to commence in seven phases, commencing on April 19th.
