PM Narendra Modi Condemns Attack on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico
New Delhi, 16th May 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly denounced the recent assault on Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico, labelling it as a “cowardly and dastardly act.” Fico sustained critical injuries in an assassination attempt that occurred on Wednesday.
Expressing profound dismay at the incident, PM Modi conveyed his sentiments through a post on his social media platform, extending wishes for Fico’s swift recovery. He emphasized India’s solidarity with the people of the Slovak Republic during this challenging time.
Reports indicate that the Slovak Prime Minister’s condition has stabilized following surgery, alleviating initial concerns about his life-threatening injuries.
The attack has been characterized as a politically motivated assassination attempt, according to Slovak Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok. Estok attributed the motives to the aftermath of the presidential election, citing the influence of “social media hate” as a contributing factor.
The assault occurred on Wednesday afternoon as Fico was concluding a government meeting in Handlova, approximately 150 km northeast of the capital. Eyewitnesses recounted how the assailant, a 71-year-old man, fired multiple shots at the prime minister while he was interacting with supporters.
