PM Modi Congratulates UK PM Keir Starmer on Election Victory, Invites Him to India

New Delhi, 6th July 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in a conversation with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday. Modi congratulated Starmer on his recent election victory and his new position as UK prime minister. He also invited Starmer for an early visit to India, as reported by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Modi and Starmer reminisced about the historic ties between India and the UK and reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations, according to the statement.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation across various sectors.

They acknowledged the positive contributions of the Indian community to the UK’s social, economic, and political development, agreeing to continue promoting close people-to-people ties, as mentioned by the PMO.

Modi had congratulated Starmer on his victory through a post on X on Friday. He also expressed gratitude to the outgoing prime minister Rishi Sunak for his leadership and contributions to deepening India-UK ties, extending best wishes to Sunak and his family for the future.

In a significant political shift, the Labour Party secured 412 out of 650 seats in the House of Commons, marking their best performance since Tony Blair’s 1997 victory. The Conservatives, on the other hand, won only 121 seats, marking their worst-ever result and concluding Rishi Sunak’s leadership of both the country and his party.
