Maharashtra: Revenue And Police Departments Take Lead In Corruption Cases; Nashik Comes First, Followed by Pune And Sambhajinagar
Pune, 29th June 2023: Cases of bribery and corruption in Maharashtra state have been steadily increasing, with the revenue department ranking first and the police department ranking second. Startling statistics have been published on the website of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), revealing that in the past six months, 434 traps have been set, and 605 government officials and employees have been arrested.
It’s a known fact that no work is carried out in government departments without bribery. Many people offer bribes to office staff in order to avoid inconvenience, while ordinary citizens are forced to repeatedly navigate the bureaucratic hurdles. Government employees tend to neglect the needs of ordinary citizens if they are not bribed. Bribery has become pervasive across various government departments, with the revenue department topping the list, followed by the Police Department. The revenue department has the highest number of bribe-takers, while the police department has a significant number of bribe-taking police constables.
During the past six months, 104 bribery traps have been set in the revenue department, leading to the arrest of 142 officers and employees involved in bribery, including 87 Class III employees. Additionally, 79 traps were set in the police department, resulting in the arrest of 109 bribe-taking police officers and personnel, including 84 police constables. The Panchayat Samiti ranks third, with 45 traps laid and 59 bribe-taking officers and employees apprehended. Municipal Corporations, Electricity Corporations, and the Education Department also feature in the list of bribery cases.
Notably, complainants at the Nagpur examination hall have been receiving inadequate responses. Nashik has recorded the highest number of bribery cases, with 91 government officials and employees caught in the act. Pune and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar follow closely behind, each with 74 reported cases of bribery. Thane ranks third with 54 cases, while Nagpur stands seventh with 43 reported cases. Furthermore, it has come to light that the trap operation in Nagpur examination centres has been the least effective in the state.
