Maharashtra: MSEDCL Discovers Theft Of 50 Lakh Units Of Electricity In Three Months
Pune, 8th December 2022: To prevent electricity theft in Maharashtra, in the campaign conducted by Mahavitaran (Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited/Mahadiscom/MSEDCL) across the state, electricity theft of 50 lakh units has been revealed in just three months. This is enough electricity for about 50,000 households with general electricity consumption for a month. This power theft is detected by concentrating on the places with the most power outages in each division of the state.
Mahavitran has begun its initiative to prevent power loss. As part of that, most power leakage is identified from the power leakage feeders. Information technology is also being used for that. In each division, the Executive Engineer of Mahavitaran and Sub Divisional Officers have been given the responsibility of fixed feeders. In some places, the leakage was up to 50 to 70 per cent. The target has been given to bring it to 20 per cent. Feeders with 30% to 50% leakage were given a target to reduce the leakage to 15%. Mahavitaran clarified that the officials are excited by the success achieved as electricity theft of 50 lakh units was detected in the first three months, and the campaign will be continued till the target is achieved.
Mahavitran is currently focusing on the prevention of electricity theft along with the recovery of overdue electricity bills. In this regard, various efforts are underway. Part of the solution is to find feeders with more power leakage and take action against them. In just three months, electricity theft of 50 lakh units has come to light and the Chairman and Managing Director of Mahavitaran Vijay Singhal congratulated the officers and employees for this discovery.
Many consumers are connected to each feeder of Mahavitaran. Power loss is determined by verifying the power supplied from the feeder and the power consumption recorded on the meters of the respective consumers. Mahavitran used information technology to identify the feeders with the highest power leakage in each section. After that, Mahavitaran officials focused on the power consumption of domestic and industrial consumers connected to them. The employees of Mahavitaran took the information about the meters of the concerned consumers’ accurate readings, if meters have been tampered with, and where the electricity theft is taking place, and are taking action accordingly.
