Jal Jeevan Mission To Strengthen Over 17,000 Water Sources In Maharashtra

Pune, 20th January 2023: Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, 17,577 water sources in Maharashtra will be strengthened. An expenditure of Rs 132 crore has been proposed for that. So far, 6,183 tenders have been floated. All these works are planned to be started by 31st January 2023. If these works are completed in time, the drinking water problem of the villages will be solved.

A state-level review of the Jal Jeevan Mission Yojana was conducted by the State Water Supply and Sanitation Department. This matter has come up in it. Strengthening of groundwater sources is being done by Ground Water Survey and Development Authority (GSDA). Under this scheme, a basic level survey of geological groundwater in the rural water supply department is being planned for the next four years to supply water to every house in the state through functional domestic tap connections.

Village Action Plan, District Action Plan and State Action Plan are being prepared while implementing the scheme. Assistance from Implementation Support Organization, Rural Water Supply and Maharashtra Life Authority is being sought for the preparation of the Village Action Plan. Schemes, which are running under the National Rural Drinking Water Programme, are being rehabilitated to a minimum of 55 litres, and functional household taps are being connected. Villages where water storage is available through abundant groundwater or other alternatives. However, in villages where water quality is not suitable, a separate plan is being taken along with the water purification project. Also, regional or multi-village schemes will be taken up in villages where the amount of water is less. The Jaljivan Mission is carrying out laboratory works for source determination, source strengthening and water quality testing, GSDA said.

Meanwhile, 17,577 water sources in 27 districts of the state will be strengthened. An expenditure of 132 crores is expected for that and the state government has approved a fund of 66 crores for the state’s share (50 per cent). All the works have been given technical and administrative approval, and it is planned to give the order of commencement of work by 31st January 2023.
