Congress 85th Plenary Session: Congress Decides To Make Strong Opposition Force
Raipur, 26th February 2023: In a bid to lead the opposition alliance, the Congress targeted the parties taking the initiative to form a third front and said that any initiative of the third force in 2024 would directly benefit the BJP-NDA. Also, given the urgent need for opposition unity in the political resolution passed in its 85th General Convention, the party has announced to throw full force to unite like-minded parties.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced a step forward in this direction to help the parties keeping their distance from the Congress so far and said that the party is ready to make any sacrifice for the opposition alliance.
Inaugurating the Congress convention, Kharge said that from 2004 to 2014, Congress served the country strongly by leading like-minded parties in the form of the UPA. The public interest government under the leadership of a very honest Prime Minister in the form of Manmohan Singh was defamed under the conspiracy.
Staking claim to lead the opposition alliance in the Lok Sabha polls, Kharge said that in the present difficult situation, Congress is the only party which can provide capable and decisive leadership. He said that there is an urgent need for a united opposition. The emergence of a third force will only benefit the BJP-NDA.
Through this, an attempt has been made to surround those parties like Trinamool Congress, Bharat Rashtra Samithi, Aam Aadmi Party, and JDS, who are engaged in efforts for opposition unity keeping away from Congress. The party has also talked about preparing a vision document for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in which important issues of unemployment, poverty alleviation, price rise, women empowerment, employment generation and national security will be included.
In his presidential address, Kharge said that the country is facing challenges like continuous attacks on constitutional and democratic values, national security along the border with China, high inflation and record unemployment. But its solution is not being found, because the DNA of the people in power in Delhi is ‘anti-poor’ and they are trying to destroy democracy.
Targeting PM Modi, he said that those who call themselves Pradhan Sevaks are serving the interests of their friends. Describing the Bharat Jodo Yatra as the first important step towards fighting power in the political proposal, the Congress reiterated its resolve to protect the attacks on the three organs of governance, the executive, the legislature and the judiciary, and spoke of strengthening the freedom of the media.
From making a new law to prevent hate crimes to strengthening federalism, the party will also take initiatives to stop the misuse of the post of governor. Along with the north-eastern states, the Congress has also talked about restoring the status of special category states to Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
The Congress resolution also mentions the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, but no comment has been made on the abrogation of Article 370.
