Bharat Ratna Conferred upon Veteran BJP Leader L K Advani by President

New Delhi, 31st March 2024: President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, upon veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani at his residence on Sunday. The prestigious ceremony was graced by the presence of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Advani’s family members, as confirmed by the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Highlighting Advani’s illustrious career spanning over seven decades, the Rashtrapati Bhavan underscored his unwavering dedication and distinguished service to the nation. Born in Karachi in 1927, Advani migrated to India in 1947 following the partition.

Throughout his political journey, Advani championed the cause of cultural nationalism and played a pivotal role in reshaping India’s socio-political landscape. Notably, during the turbulent period of the Emergency, his steadfast commitment to democracy helped safeguard it against authoritarian threats.

Advani, aged 96, has held several significant positions in Indian politics, including serving as Deputy Prime Minister from June 2002 to May 2004 and as Union Home Minister from October 1999 to May 2004. He has also served multiple terms as the President of the BJP, from 1986 to 1990, 1993 to 1998, and 2004 to 2005.

The ceremony marked a momentous occasion to honour Advani’s remarkable contributions to the nation and his enduring legacy in Indian politics.
