Amit Shah Responds to Congress Over BR Ambedkar’s Remarks, Defends His Statement

New Delhi, 18th December 2024: Union Home Minister Amit Shah responded to the Congress party amid the controversy over his remarks on BR Ambedkar during the introduction of the “One Nation, One Election” Bill in Parliament. Shah accused the Congress of distorting his words and, at a BJP headquarters event, mocked the party, claiming his resignation would not benefit them.

“Mallikarjun Kharge is asking for my resignation,” Shah told reporters in Delhi. “If that makes him happy, I will resign. But the Congress will remain where they are for at least 15 more years. My resignation won’t help,” he added.

Shah’s comment that mentioning Ambedkar’s name had become a “fashion” sparked a significant uproar, with the opposition launching a strong response during the ongoing winter session of Parliament.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi sack Amit Shah if he truly respected Ambedkar. “Amit Shah should apologize. If PM Modi respects Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, then he should be sacked by midnight. He has no place in the cabinet. Only then will people remain silent, otherwise, protests will follow. People are willing to sacrifice their lives for Dr BR Ambedkar,” Kharge said.

In response, PM Modi took to Twitter, defending Shah and criticizing Congress, calling their accusations part of a “rotten ecosystem” and labelling their efforts to distort the truth as “malicious lies” meant to cover up their disrespect for BR Ambedkar.

During the debate marking 75 years of the Constitution, Shah had commented that invoking Ambedkar’s name had become excessive. “It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar repeatedly. If they repeated God’s name as often, they would surely find a place in heaven,” he remarked.
